Charles Chuck Mackey has, in my opinion, one of the best quotes about teaching. The quote says that you have to know your students as people, not just as students. Just because they are in your classroom does not mean they are your students. They come with their own baggage and history, and you have to find out what that baggage is before you can teach them effectively.
I know this is hard for many teachers because they believe that everyone in their class is their pupil. Teaching is hard, but you have to remember that the kids are just kids, and they come with baggage of their own. This quote reminds us that we can't forget about our own children when we think about our students.
