A sailor chooses the wind that takes the ship from a safe port. Ah, yes, but once you're abroad, as you have seen, winds have a mind of their own. Be careful, Charlotte, careful of the wind you choose.

About This Quote

A sailor chooses the wind that takes the ship from a safe port. Ah, yes, but once you're abroad, as you have seen, winds have a mind of their own. Be careful, Charlotte, careful of the wind you choose. The quote above is a reference to a line in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet.

The main character says this to his girlfriend when she frets over whether to take up with the man who has recently murdered her father. She chooses to remain with him because she believes it will be better for her to have him in her life than for him to live without her. Of course, in the end, she is proven wrong and dies at his hand.

The quote makes the point that someone who has gone down a path that he or she should not have can still turn things around if they are given enough time. This is exactly what happens to Hamlet in the play.
