About This Quote

Most countries have laws that make it hard for young adults to vote. For example, in the United States, it’s illegal for anyone under the age of eighteen to vote. In many cases, the only way around the laws is to obtain a special absentee ballot. However, it’s not just about voting rights.

Young people are often prohibited from living on their own or even traveling without adult supervision. The idea behind these rules is that children under eighteen should not be trusted to make their own decisions and should therefore be controlled by their parents and other adults. We may not like it when we can’t find a parking space, but we don’t let our children suffer.

So why do we do this to them? Two things: First, we don’t think young people can handle the responsibility of making decisions for themselves; second, we believe that young people will always make bad decisions. And, in fact, they usually do make bad decisions when they are teenagers and young adults. But young people who are allowed to make their own choices seem to be more successful than those who aren’t given real opportunities to choose and fail often.
