The phrase "it's better to be lucky than good" must be one of the most ridiculous homilies ever uttered. In nearly any competitive endeavor, you have to be damned good before luck can be of any use to you at all.

About This Quote

I hate this one. I really do. It's so simple, and it's so wrong. The idea that good is better than luck is one of the most dangerous ideas out there, and we see it in too many areas of our lives.

Whether you're pursuing a career, a hobby, or a relationship, people will tell you that luck is terrible and they'll tell you to work hard at whatever it is that you're doing. That's all well and good, but they don't always take into account the amount of work it can take to be good at something. There's no such thing as luck in the sense that there's nothing you can do to make things happen for you; you have to be absolutely perfect before anyone will even consider giving you a shot at something.
