About This Quote

In 2005, the New York Times reported on a study done by a Stanford psychology professor named Carol Dweck. Dweck created a test with two different versions of a task. In one version, children were told that they had performed poorly. In the other, they were told that their performance was average, and they took it from there.

The results were astounding. In the first version, 90% of the students quit after just one failure. In the second, 90% of the kids kept going until they had earned top marks. In short: self-esteem can be boosted by failing more often than not, but it cannot be boosted by never failing.
