The novel, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas which is about betrayal, revenge, and redemption. One of the main characters in the book is Edmond Dantes . Edmond has been falsely imprisoned for the murder of his father. He has seen his family destroyed and his love, Mercedes , taken from him.Dantes' was sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island in French Guiana where he was forced to do hard labor for two years.

When he was set free after serving out his sentence, he returned to France with plans for revenge against the man who had destroyed his life. As he began to seek out his enemy, he discovered that many people had had their lives ruined by the man whom he sought. He met with avaricious businessmen who were also ruined by this man. After years of failed attempts to get revenge on this man, Dantes realized that there was only one way he could get the justice that he desired.

He would need to find a way to truly know the man with whom he shared a face and a name. Dumas wrote in The Count of Monte Cristo that in order to truly know someone, you must make yourself seem like them in order to gain their trust in order to truly know them in all their complexity.
