About This Quote

The man who went on to become the first Prime Minister of India was born in 1869. He was born as the son of a wealthy businessman and had a fairly privileged upbringing. However, he proved to be a rebellious and nonconformist child, and so his father sent him away to England for an education. He was eighteen years old when he returned to India, and he soon proved his skills as a lawyer and journalist.

When Mahatma Gandhi returned to India in 1915, he became one of the leaders of the Indian independence movement. His activism brought him into conflict with the British colonial government, which banned his activities and eventually imprisoned him for fourteen years.
