Moore was a journalist in the early 20th century who suffered from a form of schizophrenia, or what we now call bipolar disorder. In this quote, he says he knows that his beliefs are wrong, but he can’t stop believing them. He is trying to explain his reasoning for having such a strong belief in religion when in fact he knew that his belief was incorrect.
