About This Quote

The internet is killing the art of writing. The big "publish" button begs you to publish even before you go back and make one single edit, and as if this was not enough, you have instant readers who praise your writing skills!- The internet has made it easy for us to share our work with others and get feedback and advice on the way we do things. It is so easy to publish and share online that we often feel we don't need to put in much personal effort into putting our words together into a coherent message. In the past, the only way to get feedback from those that had written before us was through personal communication. Now, as soon as we put something out there online it ends up being read by hundreds of people at once.

In some cases, thousands of people will see or hear about our work before we have a chance to correct any mistakes or make any changes. In the old days, a writer would write a text and then proofread it a second time. Now, a writer posts something online and goes back and proofreads it several times over because he or she cannot be bothered to go back and delete typos or grammatical errors that have been pointed out by others. So what does this mean for us? It means that we need to focus less on getting things perfect and more on getting them done. If everything is perfect, then people will just dismiss our work as being unfit for publication – which is not necessarily true – but I think most people do not want their work to be dismissed merely because they did not take the time to proofread it thoroughly enough.
