About This Quote

Flaubert in the many of his novels, including "Madame Bovary," "A Sentimental Education," and "The Temptation of Saint Anthony," created a character who was a heretic. He was someone who did not accept the status quo, who was not afraid to challenge the church, the state, or even God. The character, in essence, was a dissenter. On occasion Flaubert would describe the heretic as an ugly person, when in fact he may have been very attractive.

The point is that when one is a dissenter or a heretic, one cannot be accepted by society. Society will want to reject one for being different.
