About This Quote

Writing in English is like throwing mud at a wall – you have to keep at it until the words begin to stick. In an effort to both learn and write in English, I have been trying since last year. The reason I took this sentence seriously is because it doesn’t say that writing in English is easy, but it does say that the process of becoming a better writer will be a slow one. Many people have tried to teach me how to write English, but I was never able to see the value in what they were saying.

They told me that writing is for creative thinkers, not dullards like me. They told me that my ideas were mediocre and that the only way I could become good at English was by reading more English literature. This all made sense to me, but I still had doubts about myself as a writer.

When it came time to put my ideas on paper, I would not be able to write more than one or two sentences. And, when I would finally sit down at my computer, I would only be able to type three words before giving up and starting over again. For months on end, I would feel defeated each time I clicked on the “save” button of my word processing program only to find out that nothing had changed on the page. I am still working on my ability to write in English, but I am getting better every day.

The more I try, the more progress I am making. Every time I don’t think something comes out right, my mind will remind me of something else that had gone wrong with past attempts. Eventually, it becomes harder for me not to write something than it is for me to write something down.
