About This Quote

That may be the case, but I think it’s a lot easier for a Black woman writer to write too much than it is for a White man. I have been writing for over forty years and I can tell you that no Black woman writer in this culture can write "too much". Indeed, no woman writer can write "too much" even if she has the time to do so. To begin with, no woman's work is ever finished.

A poet's draft of one poem is another person's draft of another poem. A novelist's draft of one novel is another person’s draft of another novel. And so on. The point is that there are no limits on what a Black woman can write about.

If she wants to write about this or that subject that Black women have traditionally written about, she can do so. And if she feels moved to write about something else, she can do that as well.
