About This Quote

A short story is a love affair, a novel is a marriage. A short story is a photograph; a novel is a film. When you read a short story, you’re having a relationship with one person. You don’t have to worry about what other people think of you or how they will judge you.

In the same way, when you read a novel, it’s a type of marriage. The author is your spouse and he or she is in control of all the elements in the marriage: the weather, the children, and the sex life. A novel is meant to be an intense experience that gets into your heart and soul.

You can’t just read it for fun because otherwise you would just be reading an autobiography. As for novels being films? That brings me back to my earlier statement about marriage being a film when it comes to novels.
