About This Quote

The 1970s was a time of social upheaval and upheaval in the United States government. Vietnam War protesters wore long hair and beards. Hippies could be seen hanging out in the streets, smoking marijuana and wearing psychedelic clothing. One group, known as “hippies,” were so radical that they thought God spoke to them directly.

Others, such as the hippies, spoke to God and imagined that God spoke back to them. These were religious fanatics who believed they had a direct line to God. But there were also those who believed that God spoke through poets and philosophers.

And then there were those who believed that God spoke through those who had dedicated their lives to thinking carefully about these things. The point is that no matter how we conceive of our relationship with God, we can all agree that we talk to God because we believe he has something to say to us about the world around us and how we should live in it.
