Rather a thousand times the county jail than to lie under this marble figure with wings and this granite pedestal bearing the words "pro patria." What do they mean anyway?

About This Quote

I would rather be broke and sleeping in a garage than to sleep on this marble figure with wings and here on the pedestal it reads "pro patria" which means for my country. This statue is placed in the middle of the National Mall and everyone has to look at it and see what it stands for and I don't think that's what they meant when they put it there.
