About This Quote

The above quote, which is often attributed to Maya Angelou, is actually much older than the poet herself. It was written by William Blake in 1787. The poem, known as "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell," is about the Holy City of Jerusalem before it was destroyed in 70 AD. The poem follows two lovers who leave their earthly marriages but still keep their worldly wealth.

Then they both join the heavenly Jerusalem, where they live in peace and perpetuity. They finally die together in heaven, having never lost their love for each other.
