About This Quote

In the late eighties, when I was in my mid-twenties and had just lost my mother, I decided to take a poetry class. I enrolled in a course taught by a professor who would never fail to entertain every student. The class was held in an old church basement and we used to sit on folding chairs and benches. I don’t know if it was the cheap wine or the cheap seats but we always had fun there.

Even so, I can’t say that what we learned in class was very useful. What matters is that it changed me. Poetry left its mark on me and it changed my life, though not in any way that was apparent at the time.

As for my mother, we still miss her every day and she will never be forgotten.
