We all know that the rituals we engage in every day, such as saying grace before breakfast, or waving goodbye to friends and family as we drive off to work, or giving thanks for something we’ve received, is a vital part of our society. These actions serve as a way of communicating our values and beliefs – they’re an expression of how we want to live – and they’re important symbols that help us understand what it means to be human. The rituals around death are no different. Whether it’s the formal statement that the person is dead brought on by a priest at the funeral service, or the tossing of salt over one’s shoulder in the wake of someone’s passing, or even the giving of last rights, these symbols make clear what it means to be human.
