How easy is murder when one calls it by a different name? How much easier is it for the conscience to condone “reaping” than “killing”–and when one knows that death isn’t the end, does it stop the killing hand for fear of retribution, or does it simply make it easier to kill, because, if life continues, how can murder be murder at all? About This Quote

In this quote from the play “A Doll’s House,” Krogstad is pondering the morality of the title character’s murder of her husband. In a society that considers all humans to be equal, it is often difficult for us to understand the value of one human being over another. The playwright has Krogstad consider the life of a rich man as opposed to a poor man and compares doing to death. She wonders if it is right to kill a man who doesn’t have much money and can therefore give less in return.

She also wonders if a man who has a lot of money is worth killing over one who doesn’t have as much or cannot give as much as would be possible if that were not the case. In this quote, she comes to the conclusion that it is not right to kill anyone who isn’t worth killing over. Killing is wrong because there are so many people in the world who are not worth killing over.
