Wasn't there only one respectable memento of a man worth keeping, the kind that draws Valentines and learns to spell Mississippi?

About This Quote

Being the good friend that he was, Nelson Mandela had always kept a few things. One of those things was a small, round wooden box. He bore this box with him everywhere he went, and eventually it became his most cherished possession. It was a simple thing, really.

It was just a small wooden box with an intricate carving of the Mississippi River on the lid of the box. He never told anyone of its true importance until the day that he felt it time to give up his life. When that day came, he had his wife place the box on top of his coffin before they closed the lid of his coffin for his final journey to freedom.

The box remained with his family until his son Zondwa took it upon himself to pass it down to Zondwa’s children after Zondwa’s death. When the son of Nelson Mandela passed away in 2006, he placed the wooden box on top of his coffin as well.
