His name was Theo. This is a common nickname for Theodore or Theodorus. Theo was a name given to Theodore Roosevelt on the day of his birth, September 14, 1858. In his early years, Theodore was known as “Teedie” around his family and friends.

He was the youngest of four children and had two older sisters, Corinne and Alice. As a child, Theodore suffered from asthma and at times would be confined to his bed. It may have been this that drew him into physical activities and made him an active and vigorous boy.

One of his sisters warned him to stay away from rough play but he ignored her advice and soon found himself in the middle of many fights with other boys his age. It was during these fights that he earned the nickname "Teedie," which is short for "Rough Rider."
