Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose, But young men think it is, and we were young.

A.E. Housman
About This Quote

As a young person, it is easy to be consumed by the pressures of life. It’s easy to get lost in the pursuit of a future that looks bright and promising. But, as Peter Griffin from Family Guy puts it, “Life isn’t very much to lose. It’s mostly stuff.” As you get older, you start to realize that all of your stuff doesn’t really add up to much in the grand scheme of things.

In the middle of life, you start to see that there is more to life than the possessions and what we do for a living. You start to realize that most of what we do is nothing more than a distraction from real life and the real meaning of what we do and who we are. When young people think about losing their lives in battle or war, they aren’t thinking about the material goods they will leave behind.

They are thinking about all of the memories they will leave behind and all of their friends and family they will never see again.
