I always say, if you must mount the gallows, give a jest to the crowd, a coin to the hangman, and make the drop with a smile on your lips.

About This Quote

In a time of war, a man is accused of a crime he did not commit. He is led to the gallows and placed upon it. The crowd gathers around, shouting their hatred and mockery at this man. He does not show any fear or worry about what they will do to him.

Instead, he grins at them, as if he doesn’t care at all. He takes one last look at the crowd and makes sure that he has his coin with him. Then, he says his final words before the drop falls.

He gives one last laugh, plays with the rope below him, and then dies.
