About This Quote

To look upon its grass grown yard, where the sunbeams seem to sleep so quietly, one would think that there at least the dead might rest in peace. This quote comes from a chapter titled "The Longest Mile" in the book memoir by James Fennimore Cooper. The chapter describes a dying man and his dying wife and their last walk together in their pasture. They see it as their last chance to be with one another and to enjoy the ranch they love.

The couple's view is of an idyllic scene, but they are very sick. The author says of this couple, "they are not particularly sad or happy, nor are they particularly lonesome." However, this scene is very lonely because no one else is there to see it. The cowboy poet thinks that the only reason the grass looks so beautiful is because it hides weeds that have sprung up out of neglect or perhaps even from death.

He sees the beauty of this scene, but he does not want to be part of it because of its sterility.
