About This Quote

In this quote from the book, The Color Purple by Alice Walker, we see that it is not what happens to us but rather how we handle the things that happen to us that shows our true character. When Sethe was a young girl, her best friend raped her and she had a baby. Years later she tries to find this girl and forgive her for what happened. However, the girl did not want to be found and so Sethe had to endure years of suffering while waiting for her to die.

Eventually she died and Sethe got up every morning and went on with her life. When asked if it was hard for her, she said, "It was hard being alive." In essence, it is how you handle the difficult things in your life that show just how much you have grown or have become stronger.
