In the famous novel by Ernest Hemingway, “The Sun Also Rises”, there is a character named Robert Cohn who commits suicide. The book is a story of the decadent years after World War I. It features a number of characters that commit suicide. In the above quote Hemingway is telling readers that suicide by violence is not the same as dying any other way.

In other words, violent suicide is not as honorable as a "happier" death. Hemingway was trying to capture the idea behind suicide and to point out that those who commit suicide are taking their own lives in an odd way.
