Unstrained, I sit and gaze, glare, survey, starethrough barred windows encased in embroidered steel. Pearly frosted dust obstructs the channels of light, leaving only small pillars of fire, arranged in disordered fragments. The antiquated sallow walls are stained with crimson braids that wreathe and scuttle about the rimes and rifts. Craig Froman
About This Quote

In this quote, the poet is speaking of a world that he can see from his prison cell. The lines describing the room that the poet is in are very colorful, with many images flowing from one to another. The words used to describe fire and light may be a little challenging to understand, so let’s take a look at each word individually: Pearly frosted dust obstructs the channels of light, leaving only small pillars of fire, arranged in disordered fragments. The first word we will look at is "pearly," which means "pale white." The next word we will look at is "frosted," which means "covered in frost or ice" or "covered in fur." The next two words are also adjectives. Adjectives are words that modify or tell something about something else.

In this case, they modify the previous word: "obstruct" means to block up or prevent something from going through. The last word we will look at is "fragments," which means broken or jagged pieces. The next line tells us what color the walls are: their color is pale, which means they are pale or very pale white in color. We then read that there are lots of little pieces of fire--or sparks--bundled up on the walls, meaning there are many small pieces of fire on the walls.

There's also a little bit of frost on the walls, meaning it's covered in frost or ice and has some ice on it. This makes you think about what kind of room would have windows like these and how no one could see out unless they were outside looking in through a slit in the wall. Also, it leaves you with an image of a prison cell with many dark windows made out of bars and covered by dust and grime!
