On March 1st, 1853, Sir William Herschel wrote to Sir John Herschel in England. He was just 13 at the time. Sir William requested Sir John to send Sir William’s telescope back. Sir William didn’t care for his new telescope because it was broken.

Sir William wanted Sir John to send Sir William’s old telescope back so he could fix it. Sir William was hoping Sir John would not give in to his request because Sir William had already wasted two years of his life trying to fix the telescope. When Sir John found out that Sir William had wasted two years of his life on a useless telescope, he wrote back to Sir William telling him that he hoped Sir William would use his gift of hope wisely.

Today, hope is one of our most precious gifts. It is a gift that can make us better people and it sets the foundation for all other gifts in our lives. Hope makes us better people by giving us strength when we are down and by giving us the strength to work hard toward our dreams when there are times when we feel defeated.

We can earn money through hard work but if we don’t have hope, we will never be able to go beyond what we have earned.
