...[M]y inner self moved; my spirit shook its always-fettered wings half loose. I had a sudden feeling as if I, who never yet truly lived, were at last about to taste life.

About This Quote

The first time I read this passage, I was stunned by the powerful connection between loss and freedom. How could it be that my mind was literally shaken up, as if it had finally woken up to its true potential? My mind was literally shaken up because I saw that I had lost something or someone that was extremely important to me. In the moment, it felt as if I were about to taste life for the first time. In a sense, that's what happened.

The death of my mother sent me into a mental fog for a long time, but now I can see what a vital part of my being she was. This passage made me realize that everything worth having is worth losing.
