But that afternoon he asked himself, with his infinite capacity for illusion, if such pitiless indifference might not be a subterfuge for hiding the torments of love.

About This Quote

In the classic novella by James Joyce, “The Dead”, the narrator of the story reflects on his last encounter with a girlfriend. The event ended in a maudlin display of self-pity and a devastating revelation about the true nature of their relationship. In a moment of reflection while waiting for a train, he thinks about what happened that afternoon. Instead of thinking about what he did wrong or how he could have done better, he remembers the way she reacted to him.

She was indifferent to his suffering and even seems uncaring. His love for her is apparent but all she has to do is be indifferent and it goes away. He wonders if this is what love is all about or if there might be something more.

He realizes that she does not see him as a person but only a collection of feelings and emotions that she does not need to know about. He is nothing more than a problem that needs to be solved by being forgotten.
