It felt like I'd been living underground, and for a moment, I'd been given this glimpse of the sky. Once you've seen that, how can you go back where you came from?

About This Quote

In the book, The Fault In Our Stars by John Green, a teenage cancer patient named Hazel goes to a psychologist for help. During their session, she explains that she feels like she’s been living underground for a long time. She’s happy that her life has been going well for a while now and she’s been getting used to it. But then, she hears the doctor say something about how people who have been living underground fall from the sky and their world is shattered.

That immediately made her feel upset because she thought of herself as being at the top of the world, but now she felt like she was falling. In this quote, John Green captures perfectly the feeling of falling from grace. He uses it to set the tone for his story and to give Hazel an instant character arc.
