It's really a wonder that I haven't dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.

About This Quote

In one of my favorite books titled, "The Little Prince," by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a little prince is visiting a planet that has a huge house in which there are a lot of different rooms. In each room, there is a plate on the wall with a different picture or figure on it. The prince asks the housekeeper what the picture is in the room where they are standing at that moment. The answer is “the most beautiful rose in the garden” and the father of the house says, “That’s my room.” When he asks about the next room, they tell him that it is the garden with all its beautiful roses.

Then he asks about the room after that where they show him a picture of a bird flying over green fields and blue water. He asks about the picture in that room and they say, “That’s me.” At this point, I was able to see how he was missing something important by not asking for why this was his most important picture. He could have said something like, “What does this mean? What is my life all about? What does it mean to be me? What's my purpose? Where am I going? Why am I here? How will I find my purpose?" This shows you how important it is to ask questions and not just accept what you're told without thinking about it carefully.

If we were always honest and asked people questions like these when we meet them and they would always answer truthfully we would learn so many things we don't know yet and we would also learn that there are some people who don't want to be bothered by such questions because they know they can't reply. But if we didn't ask such questions and only accepted what people tell us straight away, we wouldn't learn anything new or even get to know our life better. We would be living in ignorance instead of growing along with life and learning new things every day.
