As a child, I was never allowed to independently play. My parents were always there to tell me what to do and what not to do. I was forced to do what they wanted instead of following my own instincts. I never felt free because I wasn’t allowed the freedom to make the choices that were best for me. In this quote, the author is describing herself at a young age, when she was forced to follow her parents’ directions and ideas about how to be a good person.

She was not allowed to feel or express her own emotions because it wasn’t considered “appropriate” for a child their age. Her subconscious mind was trained from a young age that there is a right way and a wrong way, and that she should only express herself in one way. Her subconscious mind dictates how we feel now as adults, so if we were trained as children not to feel those emotions now, those emotions may still be locked inside our subconscious unless we allow them out through mindfulness and mindfulness meditation.
