I don't know yet what we're called, or if we have a name. I know so little and need to learn so much. I'm many things, detective, and all of them love you.

About This Quote

The quote, "I don't know yet what we're called, or if we have a name. I know so little and need to learn so much. I'm many things, detective, and all of them love you." comes from a very personal story by J.D. Salinger about the couple he created in his book "The Catcher in the Rye".

Holden Caufield is a very troubled teenager who's friend is his older brother Phoebe Caulfield. In the book Holden goes to New York City to stay with his uncle for a while. Phoebe is going through a hard time with her parents breaking up and moving out of her house and she's going on a trip to London with her cousin, the only person she has left in the world.

Her parents had been engaged but they broke it off after a disagreement over some money that was left to Phoebe by her mother's family who died in an accident on their way from France to England. Holden had been sent on the long journey on purpose so that he could see how Phoebe was doing and give her some comfort while she was away from home. It is clear from the beginning that there is something between Holden and Phoebe but whether or not they are actually in love or if they are just friends is unclear throughout the entire novel.
