This is a quote from an old British folk song called "Three Jolly Postboys." The song was written by the Scottish poet Thomas the Rhymer, who was known as the last great bard of Scotland. One of these jolly postboys came to live with the old woman Nora and her three daughters, but he was never happy. He had nothing to do all day but sit in the chimney corner and watch her burn him up fires so he could warm his feet. The other two postboys had more to do than just watch fires, but they were always happy.

One of them even sang so charmingly that the old woman Nora gave him a basket of apples every morning instead of coal. However, one day, when she went to get her basket, she found that her little granddaughter had put some peas into his basket! It made the little girl very happy; she knew that she was doing something naughty, but it made her feel more grown up.
