Its been six weeks, " he murmured. "Six weeks I've wanted you. I know how you move, and how the sunlight makes a shadow on the curve of your cheek, and the shape of your ear." He chucked harshly then turned his head on the pillow to look at her. "I'm dying, " he said. He dropped his fist against his chest. "Right here, you're killing me. Laura Kinsale
About This Quote

The passage above is from the novel "Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk. The story occurs in an unnamed location. The narrator, who is unnamed as well, has had a one-night stand with Marla Singer, which they have agreed to keep secret. After having sex with Marla, he is left with a strong hunch that he loves her.

Six weeks later, he sees her again at a bar where she works as a waitress. He requests to speak with her boss, but is refused because of the rule of no repeat customers. He decides to confront her anyway. He confronts her and asks if he can talk to her for a minute.

She agrees and takes him to the back of the restaurant where they are alone. When she asks him what he wants to talk about, he explains that six weeks ago they had sex and that he thinks that she might be the one for him. Marla cuts him off before he can continue, telling him that she has never heard of him before and that it was stupid of him to come into the bar without calling first.

When he tries to get her attention again, she tells him again not to bother her because she does not want anything to do with him anymore. He promises that he will leave if she wants him to do so because it would be unfair for her if they continued seeing each other while knowing that they will never have anything more than just sex. He then pleads with Marla for another chance and begins to tell her how beautiful she is while begging her not to leave him alone for all eternity. Marla then kisses the narrator before telling him that it's not fair for both of them if they try to stay together when neither of them are happy about being together in the first place.

She adds insult to injury by telling him that if their relationship were real, she would have noticed what he could give her before even trying his best to get something good out of it. This leaves the narrator numb and brokenhearted while Marla walks away feeling satisfied with herself for making someone feel like dirt within minutes of meeting them.
