When you think about it, the universe is very weird. You can start with nothing and end up with something. You can see a metal sphere that started as a few molecules of iron and ended up as a galaxy that includes millions of stars and billions of planets. The first person to come up with a reasonable answer was Aristotle, who said that the first substance was an unmovable entelechy. A substance is something that does not have any qualities at all, but exists on its own simply for being what it is.
In other words, if everything in the universe started as some form of substance, then everything would remain as substance forever. Something cannot be both substance and even more substance, which means it has to have some qualities as well as being something more than substance. An example of this would be water being wet and being cold (the quality) and also being H 2 O (the something more).
