They leave Omelas, they walk ahead into the darkness, and they do not come back. The place they go towards is a place even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness. I cannot describe it at all. It is possible that it does not exist. But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas. Anonymous
About This Quote

There is a city in which all of the residents are happy. It is called Omelas. Life is good for everyone, and no one is ever hungry or cold or worried about money or some other problem. But there is one thing missing from this perfect city: children.

Omelas exists on the balance of happiness, for once you bring children into this world, they bring problems with them. If you close your eyes and listen carefully, you can hear the cries of the children in the distance, begging to be taken out of that horrible city. Yet no one does anything to help them.

One day, a stranger walks into the city and sees these sad children. He knows what must be done. He takes them away to a place where they will be cared for correctly, where they will have everything they need to grow up happy and strong.

Yet when he returns to Omelas, he finds it empty. The people have all left with the children, so that not even a trace of joy remains in the city. It has become a place even less imaginable than before.
