Love goes very far beyond the physical person of the beloved. It finds its deepest meaning in his spiritual being, his inner self. Whether or not he is actually present, whether or not he is still alive at all, ceases somehow to be of importance.

About This Quote

Love goes very far beyond the physical person of the beloved. It finds its deepest meaning in his spiritual being, his inner self. Whether or not he is actually present, whether or not he is still alive at all, ceases somehow to be of importance. What matters is that we love.

A great many people have fallen in love with a long-forgotten person they once knew who died a long time ago. They reminisce about a past lover and imagine that their present one would look exactly as he did back then if they could only see him now. But they do not love him for who he is now, but rather for who they thought he was back then.

It is this idea of the beloved dying and being replaced by a new one that leads us astray from the path of true love.
