I never had one hour's happiness in her society, and yet my mind all round the four-and-twenty hours was harping on the happiness of having her with me unto death.

About This Quote

This quote was written by John Donne. He was a 17th century poet and statesman who is widely regarded as the greatest of the metaphysical poets. His most famous writings are his sermons preached at St Paul's Cathedral in London. He wrote the poem, "A Nocturnal upon St.

Agnes," in 1631. It is based on a story in his book, Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions, about a young man who is praying when he falls into a deep slumber. He dreams that he is being visited by the Virgin Mary and that she tells him that she will always be with him but that he must never try to ask for any of her help because it would be an outrage to God if he did so.
