The poems of Rumi, a 13th-century Persian poet, have been widely circulated as an example of how to live a spiritual life. The book of poetry is called the Shams-e Tabriz, which is said to have been carried by a Persian merchant as he traveled from India to Europe. In that book, Rumi wrote these words: "I am rooted in the unlimited love of the heart of the universe. Rumi's poetry is a mixture of Persian and Arabic words.
He lived in a turbulent time in which his country was a province of the sultan of Iran and his neighbors were the Ottoman Turks. In 1141, when Rumi was 20 years old, his father died. Rumi travelled throughout Asia and visited many different cultures and people.
He attended an Islamic seminary in Baghdad and later lived for five years in India as a merchant. In 1244, at age 43, he returned to Persia to teach about Islam and mysticism at an institute called Konya. He taught there for the rest of his life.
During this time, he married three times; eventually he divorced all three wives because they did not accept him for who he was. After his death in 1273, Rumi's work was published posthumously."
