Shahrzad al-Khayzuran is a fictional character in the Shahnameh, the national epic of Iran. By the end of the Shahnameh, Shahrzad has become one of the greatest heroes in Persian history. She is called “the heroine of kings” by her compatriots. When she was captured by King Kay Qubed, he longed to marry her.
But, she refused to marry him because she preferred to be free to marry the man of her choice. She said: “I would sooner marry King Kay Qubed than King Kay Khosrau.” Then, when she was later captured by King Jamshid and taken back to his harem, she once again refused to marry him because she preferred to be free to marry the man of her choice. She said: “I would rather marry King Jamshid than King Jamasp or any other king.” And so it went for many years until one day, when she heard that Jamshid was dying and his son was about to succeed him as king, she decided to seize this opportunity.
She waited until Jamshid died and his son took over as king. When the new king married her, she took full control over the kingdom and ruled wisely for many years before finally succumbing to fate and passing away into legend.
