About This Quote

The job of a writer is not to convey emotion but to invoke it. More than any other kind of writing, fiction compels the reader to experience what the writer is describing. That’s why we love reading novels and why we can’t wait for movies or TV shows based on novels. We get that same rush of emotion from stories that we get from music, movies, and television.

So, who does this better? Writers or musicians? This is a tough question, but I’ll give you my opinion. As writers, our job is to tell a story through words. We don’t try to make the reader feel a certain way; we want the reader to experience the feelings we describe in our novel. We create templates for readers to fill in their own emotions and help them to understand what it feels like to be in a similar situation.

When readers experience that emotion themselves, they fall in love with the characters and become emotionally attached to their story. In other words, by writing these books, we have created an emotional bond between us and our readers. In contrast, musicians have a different goal when they write music—they want their listeners to feel a certain way when they hear the song. They want their listeners to feel a rush of emotions when they listen to their music or see it on a movie screen.

They want their listeners to feel the same way they felt while listening while watching Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliette” so many years ago. If you listen closely, you can hear this emotional connection in most songs today; it’s almost like they are saying “I know what you are feeling right now! I know you are crying because I wrote this song about how much I love you! When people listen to music or read books, they most often want to be transported into another world where time stands still for them for just one day; where they can lose themselves in another world; where they can experience something that will change them forever; where time stands still for them for just one day; where they can lose themselves in another world; where they can experience something that will change them forever; where time stands still for them for just one day; where they can lose themselves in another world; where they can experience something that will change them forever; where time stands still for them for just one day; where they can lose themselves in another world; where they can experience something
