About This Quote

The following statement is a quote from the late American historian, Henry Adams. In it he explains why he feels sympathy for people who are not against slavery. Adams goes on to say that he feels sorry for slaveholders who are being oppressed over their own fault. He says that if someone was not born with the ability to be a slave holder, they should not be blamed for their actions.

Adams also makes the argument that if someone suffers from a defect, then they should be given the same opportunities as other people in society. Adams was trying to show that it is not fair to judge someone's actions because of their origins nor should people be allowed to make choices based on something they cannot control. The original quote reads: "The great evil of the world is the vileness of man’s nature."
