The English philosopher, John Donne, wrote these words in his Devotions Upon Emergences. He was describing the power of the Holy Spirit. The “I” in these words is God. The “I” is saying that God gave him “all the riches of justification” and “salvation in Christ.” Donne went on to say that he will give this treasure to “my neighbor.” He will give it “as Christ has given himself to me.” And, he adds, with an eager will, not because he always wants to but because his desire is so great that he cannot wait until he has it.
