This quote is spoken by Martin Niemöller in 1938, during the Nazi regime. Niemöller was a German Lutheran pastor who had initially supported Adolf Hitler and German nationalism. However, when the Nazis began imprisoning and killing German Jews, he began to oppose the Nazi regime. His opposition gained him many enemies within Germany, including Martin Bormann, who told Niemöller that he would have to "confess" his Christian faith before he could be released from prison. Niemöller refused this request, choosing instead to speak out against the Nazi regime until he was sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1944 where he died of starvation.
