About This Quote

This quote, and its companion in the next paragraph, were written by Philip Roth in "The Counterlife," but it was not in the novel. The extract is from a letter he wrote to his son, Jason, in which he recounts the story of his loss. "I was in Santa Cruz when I first met her. I'd been teaching for several years at Yale and had just agreed to spend that summer at the university there. I was living alone then and had one of those big boxes of books that I always carried with me when I went on vacation.

There were two volumes of Freud's collected works and another two of Solzhenitsyn and stories and essays by Chekhov and Waugh and Nabokov and a couple of other people … And I was reading my books one afternoon in the yard outside my house when she came up to me. She was wearing a white linen dress and had two white handkerchiefs across her bosom like a sultan's wife … She said she was an artist living in San Jose with her husband, who was a doctor or something like that. He'd been an internist for many years before they'd moved up to Santa Cruz where he worked for a while as an emergency-room doc." "The sight of her made him understand why he'd lost his faith in God."
