We imagine that our theological/conceptual systems are the means by which we know God as God is. I truly believe that such postures and perspectives put us in danger of conceptual idolatry, worshiping our ideas of and frameworks for God.

About This Quote

It is a common misconception that our theological/conceptual systems are the means by which we know God as God is. In fact, it is through the cross of Jesus Christ that we know God at all. The cross is where we see the revelation of God’s true nature and it is only through the cross that we can know Him. In other words, it is by Christ’s death on the cross that we truly know God. Therefore, while our theological systems can be tools for knowing God, they are merely tools and not ends in themselves.
