When we play bridge we must bid to win the game and not just to win the hand. We raise our bid to show our seriousness and also to show our strength. If we could really do anything at all in the world, we would surely do it. However, we can't and thus we bid for something else than what we can really afford.

The bidding for chips or money is not serious unless the stakes are raised to a high level. You should raise your bid if you want to play for more than just your own life. Many people will only play for money but not for life itself!
