We do not work for unity; we work to end and erase disunity. Unity is of God; disunity is of man. In matters of doctrine and practice of conscience, our guide should be this traditional saying: "In essentials, unity. In nonessentials, liberty. But in all things, love.

About This Quote

Jesus Christ revealed the essential unity of all people in his Sermon on the Mount. However, he also taught that truth should be determined by individual conscience, not group consensus. The early Christian church sought to live according to the principles of Christ’s teachings. The first century Christians sought to live according to Jesus’ teachings even though there were disagreements over what those teachings meant.

As Christianity spread throughout Europe, differences over doctrine and practice of conscience continued to make religious unity difficult. Nevertheless, St. Augustine of Hippo sought to reconcile Christian teaching with the world around them through the principle of love for all men.
